Questions that Invite Meaningful Participation (3 Part Series)

Workshop Series: How do you get the best thinking of a group?

On-line from 12-2pm EST on September 15, September 28, and October 4

Far more wisdom is “in the room” than any one of us has. This practical, experiential workshop gives you the skills to guide a group of any size to get everyone engaged and contributing ideas and finding answers together.

Accessing diverse perspectives allows an organization or community to find innovative responses and not get stuck in habitual ways of thinking and interacting. How do you get meaningful participation, where people feel heard and come together to generate collaborative solutions?

The answer is in framing strategic questions.

This three-part workshop series gives you lots of practice in:

  • How to use strategic questions to inspire clarity and movement for change.
  • How to host conversations and meetings that build connection, trust, and motivation for action.

Each two-hour session is an opportunity to learn new tools, while learning with other experienced social change leaders. We’ll practice on the current challenges and aspirations of participants.

Following each session, you’ll get a ‘resource-rich’ email of methods, articles, and other links to support you in applying these ideas.

Session 1: Find the Right Question at the Right Time
Thursday, Sept. 15th from 12-2pm EST

Getting clear on the right strategic question at the right time is a helpful process for all phases of a team or organization’s development. In session 1, you’ll learn:

  • How to frame powerful questions.
  • How to listen in a way that draws forth more insights and ideas.
  • A group brainstorming process, where the combined wisdom of the whole group is applied to support a participant with a current challenge, using strategic questions.
Session 2: Questions that Get Us 'Out of the Box'
Wednesday, Sept. 28th from 12-2pm EST

Having a fresh set of eyes and others perspectives on our situation can help us see limiting assumptions or uncover blind spots. Questions can lead us “out of the box” of habitual thinking to new possibilities. In session 2, you’ll learn:

  • The power of framing and reframing to allow a different conversation.
  • How to recognize paradigms that may be shaping what we see and questions we ask.
  • How to ask strategic questions from various paradigms to open up new answers.
Session 3: Using Questions to Host Meaningful Conversations
Tuesday, October 4th from 12-2pm EST

How people learn about issues, participate in decisions, and work together is critically important to achieve the impact we seek. The process affects whether and how ongoing action happens. Strategic questions are a core skill and tool to design and facilitate conversations, gatherings, and larger initiatives. In this session you’ll learn:

  • How to design participatory meetings and use questions as “banks of the river” to guide the conversations.
  • Specific participatory methods for hosting conversations and “harvesting” what you heard.

Fee to attend: $250 for the series

If you miss a session, you can access a video of the teaching portions and the handouts and notes.

Here’s what previous participants had to say:

Strategic questioning is a life skill worth mastering. It has the power to truly transform dialogue. Although I took the course for professional development, it’s been immensely valuable on the personal front as well. It doesn’t come naturally to most people, and Beth is an exceptional teacher. I highly recommend this workshop! – Sarah

Just wanted to say thanks for hosting a terrific series of Strategic Questioning workshops–one of the best on-line experiences I’ve had recently. The pacing was just right, with a good balance of teaching and small-group work, which allowed everyone to bring in their own contexts and challenges. It was especially nice to be in conversation with such a great group of people over time–the continuity really deepened my learning, and the diversity of backgrounds provoked lots of thought. The follow-up materials were very helpful, and I appreciated your responsiveness to my specific questions. – Rick

Beth’s strategic questioning courses open new windows into thinking about how to be an effective facilitator. Understanding and practicing how a carefully crafted question can focus a discussion is an immensely helpful skill. As someone who designs and facilitates group meetings, I was able to apply the course material in my own work right away. I followed up with an individual coaching session with Beth to receive some additional help on strategic questions that I was grappling with. Both the individual coaching and course sessions were very helpful in refining my work and Beth is a great thought partner. – Courtney
